Prize Bond winnings in Pakistan are subject to withholding tax when prize money is paid. The current rate is 15% for filers appearing on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL) and 30% for non-filers. National Savings confirms these rates for Prize Bond winnings.
Current Prize Bond Tax Rates
| Tax Status | Tax on Prize Money |
|---|---|
| Filer / ATL | 15% |
| Non-Filer / Not on ATL | 30% |
The tax is deducted at source from the prize amount before payment.
How Much Will You Receive After Tax?
Here are simple examples:
| Gross Prize | Filer Receives After 15% Tax | Non-Filer Receives After 30% Tax |
|---|---|---|
| Rs.100,000 | Rs.85,000 | Rs.70,000 |
| Rs.500,000 | Rs.425,000 | Rs.350,000 |
| Rs.1,000,000 | Rs.850,000 | Rs.700,000 |
| Rs.3,000,000 | Rs.2,550,000 | Rs.2,100,000 |
| Rs.30,000,000 | Rs.25,500,000 | Rs.21,000,000 |
| Rs.80,000,000 | Rs.68,000,000 | Rs.56,000,000 |
Simple Calculation
For a Rs.3,000,000 Prize Bond win:
Filer
Rs.3,000,000 × 15% = Rs.450,000 tax
Net amount: Rs.2,550,000
Non-filer
Rs.3,000,000 × 30% = Rs.900,000 tax
Net amount: Rs.2,100,000
What Does Filer Mean?
For Prize Bond tax purposes, National Savings refers to a filer as a person whose name appears on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL). A person not appearing on ATL is charged the higher non-filer withholding rate.
Your tax status at the time of payment is therefore important when prize money is processed.
Tax on Premium Prize Bonds
The Rs.25,000 and Rs.40,000 Premium Prize Bonds are also subject to withholding tax.
National Savings states that WHT applies to both prize money and profit on Premium Prize Bonds:
- 15% for filers
- 30% for non-filers
Premium Prize Bond prize money and profit are normally credited directly to the registered investor’s bank account.
